Resolution Or Resolve

As I look up both words I see they both have similar meanings but for me there is a different connotation. Maybe we have overused the word Resolution. For years people have been making a New Year’s Resolution, meaning I’m going to make an adjustment, I’m going to change something to make me better, to make my family better, to make work better or to make something work better than it did last year. According to Wikipedia, 88% of people that make resolutions break resolutions. I use to make New Year’s Resolutions but I was one of the 88 percenters. If we look at the big picture most people would agree that many resolutions don’t last long. Most of my resolutions did not last past January. So I gave up making them. Not long after my resolution to not make resolutions I became frustrated with no more resolutions. I became frustrated because as Zig Ziglar wrote — ‘If you aim at nothing, you will hit it every time.” I was hitting nothing because I was aiming at nothing. Along came the word Resolve.

According to Merriam-Webster Resolve is to “come to a definite or earnest decision about; determine (to do something)”: Joshua 24:15, whether the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD." That scripture rings of Resolve.

In his effort to have people bow down and worship the gold statue that King Nebuchadnezzar had erected there were three men who would not bow down and worship the idol. The cost for not worshiping the gold statue was death. In Daniel 3:16-18 Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego answered King Nebuchadnezzar, “Your threat means nothing to us. If you throw us in the fire, the God we serve can rescue us from your roaring furnace and anything else you might cook up, O king. But even if he doesn’t, it wouldn’t make a bit of difference, O king. We still wouldn’t serve your gods or worship the gold statue you set up.”  The end result was Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego were thrown in the furnace. In verse 25 as they were standing in the fire all of a sudden King Nebuchadnezzar jumped up from his seat and to his amazement shouted, “I see four men, walking around freely in the fire, completely unharmed! And the fourth man looks like a son of the gods!” King Nebuchadnezzar summoned Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego out of the furnace.  While the three men stood in front of King Nebuchadnezzar unharmed the king said, “Blessed be the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego! He sent his angel and rescued his servants who trusted in him! They ignored the king’s orders and laid their bodies on the line rather than serve or worship any god but their own.

I believe with a Resolve we have choices, “But if serving the LORD seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve”. A Resolve is a decision we do everything we can to come to a final conclusion with a life issue. My resolution causes me to fight. I will give up on a resolution because more often or not it was wishful thinking: I wish I could lose weight but the work may be to hard. If I resolve to lose weight I will get help. If I resolve to lose weight I will have accountability. If I want to lose weight I will exercise even if its starts with 15 minutes. I am not going to give up. If I have Resolve I will keep my word. The last point of a resolve is that it starts here and now not because it is a new year. A resolve can start at any moment any time or any place. A resolve is a conviction that things must change. Need help with a resolve? Let’s talk! Happy New Years.
